Wapping is one of East London's most atmospheric riverside neighbourhoods — cobbled streets, converted Victorian warehouses, and a five-minute walk from Tobacco Dock to the Thames. Here's how to make the most of the area.

Getting Your Bearings

Wapping feels like a world of its own: cobbled streets, converted Victorian warehouses, and a quiet, residential pace despite sitting right on the river between the City and Canary Wharf. Once one of the busiest sections of the Port of London, it's now known for its historic pubs, waterside walks, and easy access into central London.

Walk the Docks and the River

Head to Wapping Woods, a green, leafy path that runs along the old Ornamental Canal towards Tobacco Dock — keep an eye out for swans, ducks and coots along the way. From here, continue to the Thames Path for river views, or drop down onto the foreshore at low tide, where "mudlarkers" still search the banks for historical finds.

Tobacco Dock itself, a beautifully restored early 19th-century warehouse, hosts markets, pop-ups and events throughout the year — including the popular Saturday food market at nearby London Docks, with live music and artisan stalls.

Eat and Drink Nearby

• The Prospect of Whitby, on Wapping Wall, is reputedly London's oldest riverside pub, dating to 1520 — once a haunt for smugglers and sailors, now a great spot for a pint right on the river
• Town of Ramsgate, a historic, narrow-fronted pub near Wapping Old Stairs, is perfect for a quieter drink by the water
• Il Bordello, a long-standing local favourite on Wapping Lane, is well worth booking for proper Italian food
• The Cinnamon Café, also on Wapping Lane, is a cosy spot for breakfast, brunch or a coffee
• Urban Barista is another good local coffee stop, ideal for a takeaway on the way to the river
• Wapping Docklands Market (Saturdays, 10am–4pm) is well worth a visit for street food, coffee and live jazz on the quayside
• Continue along the river towards St Katharine Docks for more cafés, restaurants and a picturesque marina full of boats
• Further on, Borough Market is a scenic riverside walk away and one of London's best food markets — go before noon to beat the crowds

Culture and Sights

• Tobacco Dock, a striking glass-roofed former warehouse, is worth a look even if nothing's on — head up to the roof garden for views across the city
• Execution Dock and Wapping Old Stairs, steeped in maritime history, mark where sailors once met their sweethearts — and where pirates met a grimmer fate
• St Katharine Docks and Tower Bridge are a scenic twenty-minute riverside walk away
• The Tower of London, home to the Crown Jewels, is about twenty-five minutes on foot
• Wilton's Music Hall, the world's oldest surviving music hall, hosts atmospheric theatre and live performances nearby

Getting Around

Wapping (Windrush line) and Shadwell (Windrush line & DLR) stations are both a 5–7 minute walk, giving quick access to the City, Canary Wharf and beyond. Bus D3 runs to Whitechapel and Limehouse/Canary Wharf, and bus 100 to Tower Gateway and St Paul's.

• London City Airport: DLR direct to Shadwell (~20 min), then a short walk or one stop on the Windrush line to Wapping
• Gatwick: Thameslink/Southern to London Bridge, then the Jubilee line one stop to Canada Water, then the Windrush line to Wapping or Shadwell
• Stansted: Stansted Express to Liverpool Street, then the Elizabeth line one stop to Whitechapel, then the Windrush line to Shadwell
• Luton: Thameslink to Farringdon, then the Elizabeth line one stop to Whitechapel, then the Windrush line to Shadwell
